Masaya Yamada
Artist / Doctor of fine arts
Born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, in 1981. Received a Doctorate in Fine Arts from Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts in 2015. Notable works include the solo exhibition “Ethica” as part of the Support Program for Emerging Artists (Bunka Forum Kasugai, 2023) and providing the main visual artwork featured in the set design for the Tokai TV program “News One” (2020–2022). Drawing from profound research and mastery of Nihonga (Japanese-style painting), his practice centers on two signature series: the “Angel” series, which captures the essence of phenomena, and the “ZEN” series, which highlights the material vitality of traditional Japanese painting materials. _ Rather than replicating visible subjects, such as apples or landscapes, on the canvas, my aim is to capture a beauty that emerges uniquely in the present moment. I work with pigments derived from natural soils and minerals, glue, traditional Japanese paper, and, most critically, water—each carrying a distinct vitality. By harnessing the inherent life force of these materials, I seek to bring forth a beauty that has never existed before.
